Floral Journal Entry 210202
The first time you hear hear the flower’s name you immediately think of the sea creature. But you are absolutely correct in the assumption. From what I understand, the very center resembles a sea anemone hence its name. When it comes to the physical flower you find something surprising. The flower is actually the textural center (here in black but also in green with other varieties). The colorful “petals” are actually the sepals. What is a sepal? Think of a rose with the pointy green leaf like extremities surrounding the bud. They are the rose sepals. I know tonight you will sleep far better knowing this.
The Magic of Anemones
The anemone displays her beauty by send out sepals that are colorful and captivating. The colors range from white to the blue family of lavenders and purples, bi-colors and reds and even the newest very modern and very in demand taupe and neutral or “brownie” stem dyed blossoms.
This is one flower you need in your winter repertoire. Anemone cut flower season lasts through spring and look wonderful mixed some of my spring favorites I discussed last year.
For this particular arrangement it was important to display the fluttering ballet like dance anemones are known for. A very pure display using the shape of flower and stem to dictate the arrangement’s movement and rhythm. While executing I focused on negative space allowing individual stems to speak.
The inspiration was my occasional table and what would I display if company was coming this winter. What would my mood dictate for a simple and effective statement design. Of course anemones were top of mind.
I hope you enjoyed this study of anemones and will enjoy some from your local florist soon.
In love & style,
Petah
